Apple Press Conference

Posted by iPHi under Apple Related, Iphone News on Wednesday Sep 1, 2010

As anticipated, Apple held a press conference today in San Francisco.  Apple, Inc.  has announced the release of  some new products but the company gave no details about some rumors that have been going around.  There was no news on a white iPhone 4 or a Verizon iPhone.  But Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, Inc. did announce iTunes 10, a smaller Apple TV, a new iPod Touch, and a new iPod Nano.

There were many rumors going around that Apple was going to announce a Verizon iPhone at this event.  It has been reported recently that Apple and Verizon have been talking and trying to figure out when to get an iPhone on the Verizon network.  There were also rumors about the white iPhone 4.  As much excitement as the white iPhone 4 has caused, one would think Apple would have given some sort of update on it.  Surprisingly, there was no news on the white iPhone 4 so we all have to wait even longer to find out the release date or any other updates.

Even though there was no news on the white iPhone 4 or a Verizon iPhone, Jobs did announce new iPods and a new Apple TV.  They are available now on the Apple website.

Terminology App Comes to the iPhone

Posted by iPHi under Apple Related, Applications, Iphone News on Monday Aug 30, 2010

Terminology, a dictionary app, has had a lot of success as an iPad app, ranking 25th on the Top 100 Apps list, and once hitting the number one on the iPad Reference charts. The company has recently released the same app that is for the iPhone, called Terminology Ph.

Terminology is a dictionary, thesaurus, and research tool for those of you who need definitions, synonyms, and even the history of the words. It uses a book-like display for the information and has an in-app web browser with links that allow you to find more information about the words on Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other sites. You can even “star” your favorite words for quick access and see a history of terms you’ve browsed.

Terminology’s dictionary is viewable even if you don’t have an internet connection. Since the app got such great responses on the iPad, Terminology Ph could easily be a great iPhone reference app for students, teachers, writers, or anyone else that wants to know more about the English language.

Terminology Ph is available now for $1 and runs on iOS 3.1 or later.

Chirpy Helps Kids Learn to Read

Posted by iPHi under Apple Related, Applications, Iphone News on Thursday Aug 26, 2010

There is a new app for your iPhone that helps kids learn to read by identifying the most commonly used words in the English language.  22Moo recently updated an app for your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad called Chirpy: Dolch Sight Words Pre-Primer.

Chirpy is a cute little chicken who was created after reviewing feedback from parents, teachers, and kids from all around the world.

In 1948, Dr. Edward William Dolch made a list of the most frequently used words in the English language.  The list consists of 220 words.  Most of the words can’t be “sounded out” and have to be learned by sight.  Sight words make up about 50-70% of general text.

You can download this app here for only $0.99.

A new iPhone app has been created by best-selling cookbook author and TV personality Rachael Ray.  It’s called “Tasty Bytes” and it has over 200 recipes and cooking tips along with a shopping tool that lets you get your shopping done faster.

The app shows you which ingredients you need for certain recipes and also has a feature where you can buy whatever ingredients, meal types, or cooking styles you are in the mood for and it will show you a recipe that has those things in it.

Ray stated, “When I head to the grocery store, I know what meals I want to make for the week and I buy ingredients based on those recipes. Sometimes I bring my own cookbook to the market and feel silly carrying a book around with my head on it. I figured why not create a recipe database that was portable and mobile, so I could provide busy cooks, including myself, with a simple way to search through tons of recipes and be able to shop for ingredients in the fastest way possible.”

Your food can be “yum-o” to go for just $1.99.

Craigsphone is a free application that allows you to use Craigslist on your iPhone or iPod Touch.  Not only is it the same as Craigslist.com, it also lets you use some additional features that you can’t use on the website.

When you think about it, it may not seem like a Craigslist app could offer much more than what Craigslist.com does, but you may be surprised. Craigsphone can post directly from your phone, which includes photo uploads and location sharing.  It also has a Nearby feature that uses your iPhone’s GPS to find classified ads close to you.  It also lets you use click-to-call and history.

If you spend lot of time on Craiglist, or you just want to look around you’re out and about, Craigsphone seems like a great way to do it.

Apple Patents the iBike

Posted by iPHi under Apple Related on Wednesday Aug 11, 2010

Apple has patented the newest idea that’s been brewing in their brains.  The patent application, “Systems and Methods for Integrating a Portable Electronic Device with a Bicycle,” describes a system that interacts with the bicycle and with the rider as well.

The website patentlyapple.com describes the patent as one that can track the “speed, distance, time, altitude, elevation, incline, decline, heart rate, power, derailleur setting, cadence, wind speed, path completed, expected future path, heart rate, power, and pace.”  The system allows you to share real-time information with other riders operating on the same system.  Patently Apple even talks about a hands-free system for putting in commands via voice commands.  While the patent has the iPod and iPhone as the main devices, it doesn’t restrict the system to that, saying that other possible displays are LCD, LED, OLED, and a few others.

This new patent will be great for serious cyclists.  Not only will you be able to track your distance and speed, but you will be able to communicate with other riders you’re riding with.  This is sure to be something great.

Locktopus for Your iPhone

Posted by iPHi under Apple Related, Applications, Iphone News on Tuesday Aug 10, 2010

It is now possible to lock individual applications on your iPhone with a new app called Locktopus.  The Locktopus app provides protection against an iPhone app being opened without a password.  This app is available in Cydia for only $2.

I know I’ve been in a situation before when a friend has asked to see my phone and then gone through my text messages, email, or pictures.  If I would have had this application on my phone, I wouldn’t have had to worry about them going through my things.  This also would be a great app to have in case you lose your iPhone.  If this application was on a lost iPhone, there wouldn’t be any personal information like email, SMS, contacts, call history, or browser history on your iPhone to worry about.
