Today, Sanofi-Aventis launched the iBGStar device that monitors blood sugar levels. The iBGStar is blood glucose monitor that works as a monitor by itself, or it can be plugged into an iPhone or iPod Touch to run the new iBGStar Diabetes Manager app.
Like other glucose meters, the iBGStar standalone device has a screen, its own battery, and a 300-test memory. There’s one thing that makes it different from every other gluscose meter out there- its iPhone connectivity. When you connect it to an iPhone that is running the Diabetes Manager app, it will automatically upload the data stored on the iBGStar and it will also keep track of your personal diabetes information. You can also easily share the results, and users can quickly send their information electronically for their doctors to review. This allows users and their doctors to view trends and help diabetes sufferers to better control their illness.
This app and the meter are not available just yet. The app will be free and when the iBGStar receives FDA approval as anticipated, it will be available from Sanofi for around $80.

According to Apple’s website, they stated that “[w]e are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought.” In July, Apple began giving out protective cases after customer complaints about weak signal strength and dropped calls when the iPhone 4 was held with the infamous “death grip” that blocked a gap in the antenna.
At a conference in July, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that all phones lose signal strength if you hold them a certain way. He demonstrated this with a few other smartphones as well as the iPhone 4, but still later announced that Apple will be giving away free bumper cases to anyone who needs one.
The free bumper giveaway may be coming to a close, but anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 after September 30 that truly needs a bumper case can call Apple’s customer service because, “a small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free,” Apple stated.

Everyone has wondered if they remembered to lock their car. Well now, Mercedes Benz and Hughes Telemetics Inc. (HTI) can reassure you that you have with their newest mbrace iPhone application. HTI and Mercedes Benz released this app in November, but it has been recently updated. HTI president Erik Goldman stated that they “extended to the iPhone app the ability to remotely lock and unlock your car from anywhere in the world.”
In the original app that was released in November, all the services of the updated application were available- but you had to be in the car. Now these things can be done from anywhere in the world. Not only can the new mbrace app lock and unlock your car remotely, it also uses embedded GPS technology to find nearby points of interest. The app can also provide roadside assistance if the user’s car breaks down.
Goldman also stated, “[i]f the car battery dies, you can’t do anything with a traditional telematics system. Now you have a phone app that will automatically call Mercedes. Even if you don’t know where you are, with the GPS in the phone, it will know where you are.”
Even though the telematics system and app is only available in Mercedes cars, other cars may soon be getting the system and app, too. Goldman said HTI is working with some other companies to make a system and application that are similar to the telematics system and the mbrace app.
The basic mbrace package, which comes with the iPhone app, costs $280.
